Notes for George Clark
From Clark Saunders, who is directly descended from this George:

“George (1831-1911) became a joiner like his father; so, too, did his brother, Adam Sprott.  As young men, the two went to work in Edinburgh.  (Their father's will of 1853 describes them both as joiners in Edinburgh).  George -- and possibly young Adam -- worked as carpenters for a brewery before George went to work with William Langlands Sr. in the suburb of Morningside.  There he lived the rest of his life, a gentle-natured man.
He and his wife Agnes had a large family:
1. Adam Sprott Clark (yes, another one; 1859-1930s); became a ships' carpenter; moved to London; never married,
2. Agnes Clark (30/3/1861-7/9/1866); died at 5 1/2.
3. Alison Borrowman Clark (17/8/1863-6/6/1938); worked as a lady's maid; never married.
4. Catherine Brown Clark (3/4/1865-7/12/1946); married Robert Cramb, had 4 children, 11 grandchildren (2 living in California) and numerous "greats"; details on request!
5. Christina Turner Clark (1867-1937); married Andrew Robb; had 2 sons, 4 grandchildren, etc.
6. Jane Brown Clark (17/12/1868-5/11/1938); never married.
7. Margaret Turnbull Clark (20/9/1870-2/2/1922); married James Weir; no children.
8. Georgina (8/8/1873-1945); married James Simpson Boswell; had 3 sons, 2 grandchildren, including Lt. Gen. Sir Alexander Crawford Simpson Boswell, Governor of Edinburgh Castle and Officer Commanding the Army in Scotland (1982-1985); later Lt. Governor of Guernsey (1985-1990) (born 1928); etc..
9. William Langlands Muirhead Clark (22/12/1874-24/7/ 1952); married Janet Martin, had 3 daughters, 3 grandchildren, etc.
10. James Moore Clark (1/1/1877-11/3/1966); married Christina Ledingham; had 2 daughters -- the elder (Janet Agnes Clark, 13/10/1916 - 23/1/1999) married Thomas Saunders and had 3 sons (I am the second, James Clark Saunders, born 11/11/1948), etc.
11. John Brown Clark (3/4/1878-29/6/1929); married Janet McIntyre and had 2 children, a daughter and a son, George Clark (12/11/1915-2/3/1990) who married Elizabeth Mary Sanderson.  They have one son, Gordon Clark (born 27/6/1950) who is married to Winifred Kenyon.  They have no children, which means that of all the many descendants of Adam and Alison Clark, the Clark name will die with Gordon.  (He is my 2nd cousin and lives in Lancaster, England where he teachers Geography at the U.)

Of the 11 children of George Clark (1831-1911), my grandfather was the last survivor (by 14 years).  He was also the only one to emigrate from Britain, coming to farm near Winnipeg before the First World War and later moving into the city.  His descendants live in Winnipeg (where I am), Vancouver, Victoria and the Toronto area.”
