Notes for Adam (Spouse 1)
From his son’s death certificate. Wife listed as unknown. He was a builder, apparently.

From Clark Saunders:
“He was a joiner like his father.  On 6th November, 1827 he bought a 2-storey house (built in 1766) on the Main Street of Pathhead and a year later (December, 1828) bought a long 1-storey building next door to use as his workshop.  These buildings were pointed out to me in the 1960s and '70s by Edinburgh relatives, and I'm sure I could find them again.  It seems these purchases were made in anticipation of his marriage, for on 26 January, 1829 (at 39) he married Alison Borrowman (born 24 January, 1798; daughter of James Barrowman, b. 12 March, 1748, and Elizabeth Vallence, b. 30 October, 1768.)  Her father was from Lasswade, Midlothian and her parents were married at Humbie, East Lothian.  The Borrowmans were ploughmen, according to my grandfather, and it's curious that of Alison and her siblings, 7 spelt the name Barrowman, and 2 (including Alison) spelt it Borrowman.

Adam and Alison had 3 children.  Christian (Kirsty) (28/12/1829-14/7/1913) grew up, married James Turner (7/7/1829-15/7/1880), lived most of her life in Roxburghshire, had children, and has descendants still living.  George (1/12/1831-20/1/1911) -- my great-grandfather -- married Agnes Brown (15/7/1835-7/2/1889) and had 11 children (see below).  And Adam Sprott Clark was born in 1834.  (I have lost the source for this date, but it appears in my notes from 40 years ago.)  On 13 November,1837 Adam Sr. married his second wife, Christian Brydon, of the neighbouring parish of Cranston.  I don't know when Alison had died, but it was obviously when the children were very young; it's even possible that she died in childbirth with ASC.   At any rate the children were raised by their step-mother.  There were no children of the second marriage.

[Incidentally, I have a grandfather clock that belonged to Adam and Alison.  It was made by William Wright of Dunbar who made clocks from 1820 to 1837.  Since A&A were married in the middle of this period, I like to think it may have been a wedding present.]”
