Notes for Anne Bourne
It’s possible that this is the Anne, d. of Hugh & Ann Bourne, born in Longport on 25 Aug, 1811 (Burslem Parish Register. Longport is right beside Burslem, Tunstall, Sneyd, etc.) That’s the only possibility mentioned in the register. However, there are so many Bourne’s around, and quite a few Ann’s, so that it’s impossible to be at all confident. It’s possible, but no more than that, unless I can track down Anne’s marriage or death certificate.
Notes for Benjamin (Spouse 1)
This Benjamin and his wife Anne first appear in the 1841 census, at which time they and their four children were living in Tunstall, in Stoke-upon-Trent. (Benjamin jnr. wasn’t born yet then). Also living with them was a Thurza Bourne, probably the sister of Anne, or some such relative. Tunstall is just north of Burslem, which is just west of the original hamlet of Sneyd.
They appear again in the 1851 and 1861 census data. By 1851 our Benjamin jnr. has appeared, aged 8, and the family is still living in Tunstall, but by 1861 the family had moved to Llangefalach, by Swansea. Benjamin snr’s place of birth is given in the 1851 census as Burslem, Staffordshire, the same place as his wife was born, and they were the same age. The move to Swansea was presumably part of the immigration to Swansea that was stimulated by the growth of the pottery business in Swansea in the mid 1800’s. A lot of these immigrants came from Staffordshire, as indeed did our Benjamin and Anne.
Benjamin’s probate was recorded on 18 Dec 1866. He had effects of under 100 pounds. He was “late of Graig Trewyddfa in the parish of Llangafelach in the county of Glamorgan, Brickmaker, deceased, who died 18 October, 1866…” He left everything to his widow, Anne.
