Notes for Elspeth Allan
of Faladam, a hamlet near the eastern edge of the parish of Crichton, in Midlothian.
Notes for John (Spouse 1)
From Clark Saunders:
“The Clarks lived until the mid-19th C in Pathhead, the largest village in the Parish of Crichton in Midlothian (officially named Edinburghshire in the 19th C), east of Edinburgh -- in fact, east of Dalkeith. They seem to have attended church 2 km away at the hamlet of Crichton itself and were certainly buried there. The historic church is an imposing structure overlooking the (Midlothian) Tyne valley; a ruined castle owned by Mary Queen of Scots' 3rd husband, Bothwell, stands nearby. (I have visited the area and have engravings of both these structures.)
The earliest date I have found is 1735. That year Elspeth Allan of Faladam (Fala and Faladam are hamlets near the eastern edge of the parish) was born to John Allan and Helen Johnstone. Elspeth married John Clark (no dates) and had children of whom I have information on 2. Of James (the younger) I know only that he was born 10/12/1771. The elder, George (1757-1836) was a joiner (carpenter/cabinet maker) and married Christian Sprott (1763-1828).”
