Notes for Charles Augustus Penrhyn Boileau
A whole chapter in Chadwick
29 on this poor Charles, with the unforgettable line “... he struggled against temptation with repeated earnestness and total failure.” Got into debt, got bailed out by Daddy time after time, was going to be court-martialled but was saved by being sent to active service in the Crimea. Where, unfortunately, he was killed. He was shot in the leg, then in the torso, crawled 200 metres to the nearest trench, wrote a letter to Caroline saying that henceforth he would be a different man (according the Chadwick “... the last and most sincere and most moving of his many professions of penitence...”), and made it to Malta before he finally succumbed.
