Notes for Peter Smyth
This has to be one step better than Smythe.
Notes for Angela Helen (Spouse 1)
Mostly, I remember she had green hair at one stage, and went to Australia where she had a wild time. I was quite jealous.
Now (2007) divorced from Peter Smyth.
In 2018, Angela wrote to me, telling me a bit about her family history:
Eliza Lockett (migrated to NZ from England aged 17); married to Captain John Ellis, a whaler, who drowned after a whale hit the whaling boa. Eliza and Captain John had two sons. Eliza then married Thomas Deacon, a major landowner and publican at Riverhead, north of Auckland. They had six children, including my maternal great grandmother, Sarah. Sarah married James Griffin, an American adventurer who sailed the seas before settling in northland. (My second on, Griffin, is named after that side of the family). James ran the Whitehorse Tavern in Riverhead and apparently drank away the family fortune. Sarah and James had four children, including my grandmother, Helen Tanzin Griffin. Helen married Willian Shanly, a civil servant, who went on to have a prominent and prosperous life in Wellington. However, he had already had one marriage with a child whom he left; he also left my grandmother when my mother was a baby or toddler. So my mother (Little Helen) was brought up by her mother (Big Helen, a teacher) and her grandmother, Sarah Griffin. My mother married Brian and had myself and Stephanie. Helen Shanly married Ralph Cahill (a 1st cousin) and they had Joan. Joan married Grant Knight and they have two sons, Andrew (known as Joshua), who works at Melbourne Uni in big health data, and Oliver, who lives in Auckland as a systems manager or some such at Auckland City Council.
