Notes for John Cheyney
So, Berry says that Jane’s father was John Cheyney of Cralle. Well, yes, but WHICH John Cheyney of Cralle? There’s the rub.

The Cheyne family of Cralle is well known. I did find a web page that purported to say which John Cheyney this was, but NO references were given, and I have no idea how reliable it is. Probably not at all. According to this web page, Jane was the daughter of John Cheyney and Margaret Oxenbridge. I doubt this very much.

The genealogy of the Cheyneys of Cralle is documented in the Sussex Archive Collection v. 65 pp. 47-51, in an article by L.F. Salzman. John and Margaret are there, in detail, with extracts from their wills. John’s will mentions a daughter, Joan, by his first wife, Agnes Farby. Joan is also mentioned in Margaret’s will. However, there is no mention of any Thomas Newington anywhere. This Joan may, or may not, be my Jane..

On the other hand, this was the only John (Father) and Joan (daughter) pairing in the Cheyney genealogy, as laid down by Salzman, so it’s the only realistic possibility. If so, it would extend the genealogy for an additional 6 generations, back to Alexander de Cheyney. That all seems rather reliable, and done by an expert. Mind you, what do I know?

The will of the John Cheyney in the Sussex Archives was proved in 1494. So that date is consistent with his daughter being my Jane.
