Notes for William Warner Anderson
I knew very little about William Warner until Joanna McKinnon sent me her research on the Anderson family. He came with his family on the “Eastfield”, arriving in Auckland on 12 December, 1857. I haven’t yet put all of Joanna’s information into my web site, as she has asked me to delay doing so for a time.
Occupation listed as carpenter in 1881. Called a builder on his death certificate. According to his death certificate he was born in 1855, which agrees with the fact that he was 2 in 1857. He came to NZ when he was 10, in 1865, according to his death certificate, but this doesn’t inspire me with any confidence at all. Sounds much more like an approximate guess, than an actual reliable date.

He became moderately successful, although not without hiccups, as he was declared bankrupt on 10 December, 1894. New Zealand Herald, Volume XXXI, Issue 9685, 4 December 1894, Page 1. He was a carpenter at Aratapu. He was discharged from bankruptcy on (I think) 10 Dec, 1895 (the date is difficult to read). New Zealand Herald, Volume XXXII, Issue 9982, 20 November 1895, Page 1.
BANKRUPTCY. IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW ZEALAND, NORTHERN JUDICIAL DISTRICT. In the matter of the Bankruptcy Act, 1892, and in the matter of
WILLIAM WARNER ANDERSON, of Aratapu, Carpenter, a Bankrupt. Notice is hereby given that It is the Intention of the abovenamed Bankrupt to apply to this Honorable Court on MONDAY, the 10th(?) day of December, 1895, at the hour of eleven o'clock in the forenoon, or so soon thereafter as he can be heard in that behalf, for an Order of Discharge from the said Bankruptcy.
WILLIAM W.
ANDERSON, The Bankrupt in Person
————————
He became a well-known builder and sawmill contractor (according to his wife’s obituary). When he died he had three daughters (aged 45, 44, and 40) and one son (aged 46).
80Their marriage certificate says the marriage occurred at the Office of the Registrar of Marriages. One suspects it wasn’t an elaborate social occasion.

The announcement in the paper was in the New Zealand Herald, Volume XIV, Issue 5005, 30 November 1877, Page 2.
Anderson-Webb
On November 20th, 1877, at the office of the Registrar, J.M. Wayland, Esq. William Warner Anderson, youngest son of James Anderson, late of Camden Town, London, to Charlotte, second daughter of Thomas Stirrup Webb, of Northern Wairoa, Kaipara, late of Bilston, Staffordshire, England.

Death notice was in the New Zealand Herald, Volume LXII, Issue 19002, 27 April 1925, Page 1. Said he was interred on Anzac day at Hillsborough Cemetery.
Notes for Charlotte (Spouse 1)
She was still living when her husband died, and was then 73, according to William’s death certificate. This doesn’t agree with her daughter’s birth certificate, which implies she was 68 when her husband died.
————————————
Fortunately, I later found her obituary in the Auckland Star, Volume LXV, Issue 44, 21 February 1934, Page 15. It reads:
MRS. CHARLOTTE ANDERSON.
An old resident of Northern Wairoa, Mrs. Charlotte Anderson, died on February 19 at the home of her daughter, Miss Annie Anderson, of Burnley Terrace, Sandringham. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stirrup Webb, and arrived with them at Northern Wairoa when a child. Her brother, Mr. Thomas Webb, died quite recently. Miss Webb was married to the late Mr. William Warner Anderson, builder and contractor. Six or seven years ago Mrs. Anderson came to live in Auckland. The following children are left—Miss Annie Anderson, Mr. Harold S. Anderson (Auckland) and Mrs. A. J. Martin (Dargaville).
———————————
Funny how the obituary doesn’t mention Emily, whom I’m pretty sure was still alive, and her daughter.
Her death notice is in the Auckland Star, Volume LXV, Issue 42, 19 February 1934, Page 1. Says she was aged 82, which would put her birth date as 1852. I have no idea which is correct.

From the New Zealand Herald, Volume LXXI, Issue 21730, 20 February 1934, Page 12.
MRS. CHARLOTTE ANDERSON
A Northern Wairoa pioneer, Mrs. Charlotte Anderson, died yesterday at the residence of her daughter, Miss Annie Anderson, of Sandringham, aged 83 years. Mrs. Anderson arrived at Northern Wairoa with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stirrup Webb, as a child. She was a sister of the late Mr. Thomas Webb, another pioneer, whose death occurred recently. Her husband, the late Mr. William Warner Anderson, a well-known builder and sawmill contractor, predeceased her a number of years ago. After his death Mrs. Anderson came to live at Dargaville, but left six or seven years ago to live at Sandringham. In addition to Miss Annie Anderson, Mr. Harold S. Anderson, of Auckland, and Mrs. A. J. Martin, of Dargaville, are members of her family who survive her. There is a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
