Notes for Renée d’Avrout
We know from [BHSP]308 that Renée was killed at the massacre of Vassy, in 1562. (The Duc de Guise, travelling to his estates, stopped in Vassy on a Sunday. A few of his servants got into a scuffle with some Huguenots who were attending a service in a nearby church, and the whole thing escalated until the Guise faction set the church on fire, and killed a number of the congregation.)

She was murdered in front of her two young sons, aged 14 and 15. According to my crappy translation of [BHSP]308:
“Everything that we have been able to learn about the origins of her husband, was told to my grandmother, Marie Le Noir, by her late husband David Collot, esquire, seigneur d'Escury. He said to her that when he was about 15 years old, and his brother a year younger, his mother was killed in the massacre in the church at Vassy, a small town in Champagne, on the Bloise, in the first religious civil war in the reign of Charles IX. His mother perished in the church at the hands of the army of the duc de Guise. While they were chanting Psalm 88, the barbarians entered the church, sword in hand, and massacred everybody there, and he and his brother could hear their mother, who was a widow, asking God many times to save her children, for the sake of her who was dying for his holy name”.

If I read it correctly, the two young boys were saved because they had white in their hats. I think. White was the colour of the troops of the Duc de Guise.
