Mayor of Tenterden, 1622.
103[CT]: 477. Here lyeth interred the body of Stephen CVRTEIS Esq., Maior of this Towne and Hundred, who died the 12th of August, 1654. Having ……….. sonne named Nathaniel and onely davghter named Elizabeth. Being aged 28 years.Registers. Stephen Curteis Esqre. Major, buryed the 12th day August, 1654.
It seems that the father of Nathaniel and Elizabeth is not the same as the Stephen, father of Samuel, who appears in the Curteis pedigree. Either that, or the pedigree made a big mistake somewhere. Wouldn’t surprise me. The father of Nathaniel was the Mayor of Tenterden, for sure, which would tend to identify him with my Curteis’s. However, his will seems to say that his wife was called Mary Stark, not Short, if I’m reading it correctly.
I haven’t yet transcribed the full will, but some of people listed are (I think):
Dear and loving wife, Mary Curteis
Sisters Elizabeth Curteis and Martha Whitfeld[?]
Brothers Samuel Stark and Robert Stark
Son Nathaniel Curteis
Daughter Elizabeth Curteis
Brothers Mr. William Randall and Mr. George Whitfeld
Dau. and heir of Edward Short, of Heronden. A Short pedigree is given in the 1619 Visitation of Kent
106, but I can’t identify either Elizabeth or Edward. Another Short female, Margaret, is given as marrying a Thomas Curteis, but no date is given.
