Rich Man, Poor Man: the photo albums

Boileau de Castelnau

Detail of the inscription below the portrait of Jacques Boileau. It reads (in the translation of Francoise Breuzet): "This sorrowful face expressing meagreness and sadness provoked by what he has borne, his forehead deformed by wrinkles, his neglected and plentiful beard, are those of an exiled man having adhered to ideas prevalent in Europe for a long time. His expression shows the cruel fate which is reserved for him. In memory of this imprisonment, an honest woman named JOANNE GARNIER from Lyon, had hand-drawn this portrait of noble LORD JACQUES de BOILEAU, domain of Castelnau, Sainte Croix, in the year 1694, April 15, captive 8 years, 3 months, 3 days. He died on july 17 1697-born in 1671. Prisoner for 11 years, 11 months, 6 days."
